Why Kashi Vishwanath is the Most Sacred Jyotirlinga
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, situated on the western bank of the sacred Ganga in Varanasi, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and arguably the most important pilgrimage site in all of Hinduism. It is believed that a darshan here liberates the soul from the cycle of birth and death — and that Lord Shiva himself whispers the Taraka mantra in the ears of those who die in Kashi, granting them moksha.
Temple Timings (2025)
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple follows a strict schedule with multiple aartis throughout the day. The temple is open from 3:00 AM to 11:00 PM.
- Mangala Aarti: 3:00 AM – 4:00 AM (most auspicious, very limited entry)
- Bhogshringar Aarti: 11:15 AM – 12:20 PM
- Saptarishi Aarti: 7:00 PM – 8:15 PM (most popular with tourists)
- Shringar Bhog Aarti: 9:00 PM – 10:15 PM
- Shayan Aarti: 10:30 PM – 11:00 PM
Dress Code and Entry Rules
The temple has a strict dress code. Men must wear traditional attire (dhoti or kurta-pyjama). Women should wear sarees or salwar kameez — no western clothing. Leather items (belts, bags, shoes) are not permitted inside. Mobile phones are generally not allowed inside the main sanctum.
Practical Tip
Arrive at least 45 minutes before your intended darshan time. The queues can be very long, especially on Mondays (Shiva's sacred day) and during Shravan month.
How to Reach Kashi Vishwanath Temple
The temple is located in the heart of Varanasi's old city (Vishwanath Gali). The nearest landmarks are Dashashwamedh Ghat and Godaulia Chowk. No vehicles can enter the narrow lanes — you will walk 5-10 minutes from the nearest drop point.
If you're arriving from Varanasi airport or railway station, the best approach is to hire a cab to Godaulia Chowk and walk from there. Our drivers know the best drop points to minimize your walk.
Security and Verification
All visitors must pass through security screening. Foreigners require valid ID proof. Indian visitors should carry Aadhaar card. Photography is prohibited inside the sanctum but permitted in some outer areas.
Best Time to Visit
The most auspicious times to visit Kashi Vishwanath are:
- Mahashivratri (most crowded but extremely sacred)
- Shravan month (July-August) — every Monday
- Kartik Purnima
- Early morning (3-7 AM) for a peaceful, deeply spiritual experience
Combining with Ganga Aarti
Most pilgrims combine the temple darshan with the magnificent Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, which takes place every evening at sunset. The walk between the two is just 10 minutes through the vibrant lanes of Varanasi.
